Move the univ, maybe, pair and unit types from std_util into their own
modules. std_util still contains the general purpose higher-order programming
constructs.

library/std_util.m:
Move univ, maybe, pair and unit (plus any other related types
and procedures) into their own modules.

library/maybe.m:
New module. This contains the maybe and maybe_error types and
	the associated procedures.

library/pair.m:
New module. This contains the pair type and associated procedures.

library/unit.m:
New module. This contains the types unit/0 and unit/1.

library/univ.m:
New module. This contains the univ type and associated procedures.

library/library.m:
	Add the new modules.

library/private_builtin.m:

In some cases, change the names of predicates and types to make them
meaningful without the module qualifier. In particular, most of the

Estimated hours taken: 2
Branches: main

Remove support for the Aditi backend. It is a pain to have to update it every
time a data structure changes when we don't see any benefit from it, and its
presence makes compilation of the compiler directory take about 10% longer
(since the Aditi backend modules are roughly 10% of the code in the compiler
directory). Deleting the Aditi-specific data structures from the HLDS should
also speed up compilation a little bit.

I have spoken to Rao and he is fine with this step.

Aditi users, if there are any, can continue to use the Aditi support in
release 0.12.*. I also tagged the last version on the trunk to support aditi
with the name "last_aditi". The need for modifications in this Aditi support
is likely to be very rare to nonexistent, if the recent past is any guide:
the Aditi backend hasn't seen a nontrivial modification in a year or more.

2a477fb7e7 Split the parse tree (currently defined in prog_data.m) into two
Estimated hours taken: 3.5
Branches: main

Split the parse tree (currently defined in prog_data.m) into two
separate modules. The reason for doing this is that while over 80%
of the modules in the compiler import prog_data, very few of them actually
require access to the types that define the parse tree (principally
the item type). At the moment even small changes to these types can
result in recompiles that rebuild almost all of the compiler. This change
shifts the item type (and related types) into a new module, prog_item,
that is only imported where these types are required (mostly at the
frontend of the compiler). This should reduce the size of recompiles
required when the parse tree is modified.

This diff does not change any algorithms; it just shifts things around.

compiler/prog_data.m:
Move the item type and any related types that are not needed
after the HLDS has been built to the new prog_item module.

f9fe8dcf61 Improve the error messages generated for determinism errors involving committed
Estimated hours taken: 8
Branches: main

Improve the error messages generated for determinism errors involving committed
choice contexts. Previously, we printed a message to the effect that e.g.
a cc pred is called in context that requires all solutions, but we didn't say
*why* the context requires all solutions. We now keep track of all the goals
to the right that could fail, since it is these goals that may reject the first
solution of a committed choice goal.

The motivation for this diff was the fact that I found that locating the
failing goal can be very difficult if the conjunction to the right is
a couple of hundred lines long. This would have been a nontrivial problem,
since (a) unifications involving values of user-defined types are committed
choice goals, and (b) we can expect uses of user-defined types to increase.

compiler/det_analysis.m:
Keep track of goals to the right of the current goal that could fail,
and include them in the error representation if required.

compiler/det_report.m:
Include the list of failing goals to the right in the representations
of determinism errors involving committed committed choice goals.

Convert the last part of this module that wasn't using error_util
to use error_util. Make most parts of this module just construct
error message specifications; print those specifications (using
error_util) in only a few places.

compiler/hlds_out.m:
Add a function for use by the new code in det_report.m.

compiler/error_util.m:
Add a function for use by the new code in det_report.m.

compiler/error_util.m:
compiler/compiler_util.m:
Error_util is still changing reasonably often, and yet it is
included in lots of modules, most of which need only a few simple
non-parse-tree-related predicates from it (e.g. unexpected).
Move those predicates to a new module, compiler_util.m. This also
eliminates some undesirable dependencies from libs to parse_tree.

compiler/libs.m:
	Include compiler_util.m.

compiler/notes/compiler_design.html:
Document compiler_util.m, and fix the documentation of some other
	modules.

compiler/*.m:
Import compiler_util instead of or in addition to error_util.
To make this easier, consistently use . instead of __ for module

tests/invalid/det_errors_deet.{m,err_exp}:
Add this new test case to test the error messages for unifications

	Add the new test cases.

tests/invalid/det_errors.err_exp:
tests/invalid/magicbox.err_exp:
Change the expected output to conform to the change in det_report.m,
	which is now more consistent.

b2012c0c0e Rename the types 'type', 'inst' and 'mode' to 'mer_type', 'mer_inst'
Estimated hours taken: 8

compiler/*.m:
Rename the types 'type', 'inst' and 'mode' to 'mer_type', 'mer_inst'
and 'mer_mode'. This is to avoid the need to parenthesize these type
names in some contexts, and to prepare for the possibility of a parser
that considers those words to be reserved words.

Rename some other uses of those names (e.g. as item types in
	recompilation.m).

Delete some redundant synonyms (prog_type, mercury_type) for mer_type.

Change some type names (e.g. mlds__type) and predicate names (e.g.
deforest__goal) to make them unique even without module qualification.

Rename the function symbols (e.g. pure, &) that need to be renamed
to avoid the need to parenthesize them. Make their replacement names
	more expressive.

Convert some more modules to four space indentation.

Avoid excessively long lines, such as those resulting from the
automatic substitution of 'mer_type' for 'type'.

3fc6b3f128 Change the representation of types in the compiler.
Estimated hours taken: 30
Branches: main

Change the representation of types in the compiler.

We also add some support for handling kinds, which will be used later when we
have a kind system. There are a number of places where kinds are not yet
handled correctly -- we assume that all kinds will be `star'. Each of these
locations is flagged with a comment that contains "XXX kind inference:".

compiler/prog_data.m:
Implement the new version of type (type).

Change the definition of type_param to be a variable instead of a
term, since all parameters must be variables anyway.

Implement versions of varset.merge_* which work with tvarsets and
produce renamings instead of substitutions. Renamings are more
convenient than substitutions because we don't need to know the
kinds of type variables in order to build the renaming, and in any
case the substitutions shouldn't have anything other than variables
in the range so renamings will be more efficient and safe.

Define the type of kinds, and provide a couple of utility predicates
	to operate on them.

compiler/prog_io.m:
Parse type definition heads as a sym_name and list of type_params,
rather than a functor. Handle this change in other predicates.

Allow parse errors to be returned by get_with_type/3, and handle
	these errors.

Remove parse_type/2. This predicate didn't do any processing, it
	just forwarded handling to convert_type/2.

compiler/prog_io_typeclass.m:
Change type_is_functor_and_vars to handle the new representation
of types. In doing so, we retain the old behaviour that pure
predicates pass this test, but no other pred or func types. This
behaviour is arguably incorrect, but there is little point changing
the behaviour at the moment. Instead we should remove these kind of
restrictions entirely, but that should be done later.

compiler/prog_io_util.m:
Provide predicates to both parse and unparse types. We need to
unparse types before printing them out, since we do a lot of special
case handling when printing out terms and we don't want to duplicate
	this functionality for types.

compiler/module_qual.m:
Remove report_invalid_type. We now report ill-formed types during
	parsing.

compiler/superhomogeneous.m:
Handle errors from the parsing of type expressions.

compiler/prog_out.m:
Provide a predicate to convert builtin_types to their string names,
	and vice-versa.

compiler/prog_type.m:
Add a bunch of simple tests to use on types which may have kind
annotations present. In such cases, types do not have a canonical
representation so the simple handling of these tests is not what we
want. (Note that these are only required in early phases. The kind
annotations -- when they are implemented -- will be removed before
	type checking.)

Consistently handle the application of renamings, substitutions and
recursive substitutions to various data structures.

compiler/mercury_to_mercury.m:
	Implement mercury_output_type, mercury_format_type and
mercury_type_to_string. These convert the type to a term before
formatting -- the reason for this is so that appropriate parentheses
are used when formatting operators. This results in some slight
changes to error messages, which are reflected in changes to the
expected output files in the tests.

Remove the old version of mercury_type_to_string.

Change the argument ordering of mercury_format_var to be consistent
with mercury_format_type. (Other predicates in this module should
probably be changed in a similar way, since this argument ordering
is more amenable to higher-order programming. But that can be left
	for another change.)

compiler/type_util.m:
Implement type unification. The behaviour is much the same as the
previous behaviour, except that we now handle apply/N types properly,
and we also allow for kind annotations.

Implement an occurs check for types.

Remove the example definition of replace_eqv_type. It isn't used and
would no longer work anyway even if it would have worked before.

	Add a tvar_kind_map field to ctor_defn.

The functions type_info_type and type_ctor_info_type now return
types with `void' as their argument, rather than the type that the
	type_info or type_ctor_info was for.

Remove type_util.real_vars/2, since it no longer does anything
	different from prog_type.vars/2.

Remove the commented out implementation of type_to_ctor_and_args/3.
Its implementation is in prog_type.m, and has changed significantly
	in any case.

compiler/add_clause.m:
	Move parse_purity_annotation/3 to prog_io_util.m.

compiler/check_typeclass.m:
Remove apply_substitution_to_var_list/3, since we now have predicates
in prog_type.m to handle such things.

compiler/continuation_info.m:
compiler/trace.m:
Use prog_type.vars/2 instead of type_util.real_vars/2. The two
predicates have the same meaning now since type_infos don't contain
	any type variables.

compiler/hlds_data.m:
	Add tvar_kind_map fields to hlds_type_defn and hlds_class_defn.

compiler/hlds_pred.m:
	Add a tvar_kind_map field to pred_info.

compiler/polymorphism.m:
	Add a tvar_kind_map field to poly_info.

Remove unify_corresponding_types, which is no longer used.

compiler/hlds_out.m:
Use mercury_output_type/5 instead of term_io__write_term/4 and
	mercury_output_term/5.

compiler/post_typecheck.m:
Build the void substitution directly rather than building intermediate
	lists.

compiler/recompilation.version.m:
Use term__list_subsumes instead of type_list_subsumes, which now
operates only on types. This follows up on what was suggested in
	an XXX comment.

compiler/typecheck_errors.m:
Use unparse_type/2 to format error messages.

compiler/typecheck_info.m:
Don't export write_type_with_bindings/5. It is no longer used
	outside of this module.

compiler/*.m:
	Conform to the above changes.

library/rtti_implementation.m:
Fix a syntax error that went undetected in our previous
implementation, and amazingly enough was compiled correctly anyway.

library/term.m:
Move the versions of term__unify, term__unify_list and
term__list_subsumes that were implemented specifically for types
to here. The version of term_unify that takes a list of bound
variables (i.e., variables that should not be bound any further)
is used by the subsumption check, which in turn is used by
	recompilation.version.m.

8b8b3b7d3f Replace the some() HLDS goal with a more general scope() goal, which can be
Estimated hours taken: 12
Branches: main

Replace the some() HLDS goal with a more general scope() goal, which can be
used not just for existential quantification but also for other purposes.

The main such purposes are new goal types that allow the programmer
to annotate arbitrary goals, and not just whole procedure bodies, with the
equivalents of promise_pure/promise_semipure and promise_only_solution:

	promise_pure ( <impure/semipure goal> )
	promise_semipure ( <impure goal> )

	promise_equivalent_solutions [OutVar1, OutVar2] (
		<cc_multi/cc_nondet goal that computed OutVar1 & OutVar2>
	)

Both are intended to be helpful in writing constraint solvers, as well as in
other situations.

doc/reference_manual.texi:
	Document the new constructs.

library/ops.m:
Add the keywords of the new constructs to the list of operators.
Since they work similarly to the "some" operator, they have the same
	precedence.

compiler/hlds_goal.m:
Replace the some(Vars, SubGoal) HLDS construct, with its optional
keep_this_commit attribute, with the new scope(Reason, SubGoal)
construct. The Reason argument may say that this scope is an
existential quantification, but it can also say that it represents
a purity promise, the introduction of a single-solution context
with promise_equivalent_solutions, or a decision by a compiler pass.

It can also say that the scope represents a set of goals that all arise
from the unraveling of a unification between a variable and a ground
term. This was intended to speed up mode checking by significantly
reducing the number of delays and wakeups, but the cost of the scopes
themselves turned out to be bigger than the gain in modechecking speed.

Update the goal_path_step type to refer to scope goals instead of just
	existential quantification.

compiler/prog_data.m:
Add new function symbols to the type we use to represent goals in items
to stand for the new Mercury constructs.

compiler/prog_io_goal.m:

compiler/make_hlds.m:

	representation.

Document how the from_ground_term scope reason would work, but do not
	enable the code.

compiler/purity.m:
When checking the purity of goals, respect the new promise_pure and

compiler/handle_options.m:
Make the options that are meaningful only in the presence of

Estimated hours taken: 17
Branches: main

This adds a module mdbcomp__trace_counts that reads in the
.mercury_trace_counts files produced by the compiler's trace mechanism.
The format of said files was slightly changed.

As the new module is to be used by the compiler and the debugger, it is
placed in the mdbcomp module. This required bringing some types from the
compiler into a new module within mdbcomp.

browser/trace_counts.m:
New module for reading execution trace summaries.

browser/prim_data.m:
New module holding types and predicates moved in from the compiler.
	Types:
		pred_or_func, sym_name, module_name, proc_label,
		special_pred_id, trace_port
	Predicates:
		string_to_sym_name, insert_module_qualifier

The mode field of proc_label is now an int instead of a proc_id
to avoid pulling proc_id into mdbcomp.

browser/mdbcomp.m:
Add trace_counts and prim_data to the mdbcomp module.

browser/declarative_execution.m:
	Renamed mdb's definition of module_name to flat_module_name
to avoid conflicts with the definition in mdbcomp__prim_data.

runtime/mercury_trace_base.c:
In the format of .mercury_trace_counts, write module and predicate
names now use quoted atom syntax so that names with spaces and
	non-printable characters can be machine-parsed.

browser/:
compiler/:
Many changes to account for movement of types, and the change to

885fd4a387 Remove almost all dependencies by the modules of parse_tree.m on the modules
Estimated hours taken: 12
Branches: main

Remove almost all dependencies by the modules of parse_tree.m on the modules
of hlds.m. The only such dependencies remaining now are on type_util.m.

compiler/hlds_data.m:
compiler/prog_data.m:
Move the cons_id type from hlds_data to prog_data, since several parts
of the parse tree data structure depend on it (particularly insts).
Remove the need to import HLDS modules in prog_data.m by making the
cons_ids that refer to procedure ids refer to them via a new type
that contains shrouded pred_ids and proc_ids. Since pred_ids and
proc_ids are abstract types in hlds_data, add predicates to hlds_data
	to shroud and unshroud them.

Also move some other types, e.g. mode_id and class_id, from hlds_data
	to prog_data.

compiler/hlds_data.m:
compiler/prog_util.m:
Move predicates for manipulating cons_ids from hlds_data to prog_util.

compiler/inst.m:
compiler/prog_data.m:
Move the contents of inst.m to prog_data.m, since that is where it
belongs, and since doing so eliminates a circular dependency.
The separation doesn't serve any purpose any more, since we don't
need to import hlds_data.m anymore to get access to the cons_id type.

compiler/mode_util.m:
compiler/prog_mode.m:
compiler/parse_tree.m:
Move the predicates in mode_util that don't depend on the HLDS to a new
module prog_mode, which is part of parse_tree.m.

compiler/notes/compiler_design.m:
Mention prog_mode.m, and delete the mention of inst.m.

compiler/mercury_to_mercury.m:
compiler/hlds_out.m:
Move the predicates that depend on HLDS out of mercury_to_mercury.m
to hlds_out.m. Export from mercury_to_mercury.m the predicates needed
	by the moved predicates.

compiler/hlds_out.m:
compiler/prog_out.m:
Move predicates for printing parts of the parse tree out of hlds_out.m

compiler/prog_out.m:
Move predicates for printing purities from purity.m, which is part
of check_hlds.m, to prog_out.m, since mercury_to_mercury.m needs to use
	them.

compiler/passes_aux.m:
compiler/prog_out.m:
Move some utility predicates (e.g. for printing progress messages) from

da2ed598e0 Extend constrained polymorphic modes to allow inst parameters to be
Estimated hours taken: 80
Branches: main

Extend constrained polymorphic modes to allow inst parameters to be
constrained to insts other than `ground'. The main motivation for this
is that for HAL we want inst parameters constrained to `any', however
this change is more general and allows inst parameters to be constrained
to any valid inst.

Introduce the syntax `InstParam =< Inst' to constrain an inst parameter

9c9601808d Add an alternative implementation of Mmake as part of the compiler.
Estimated hours taken: 500

Add an alternative implementation of Mmake as part of the compiler.
The advantages of this are
	- more accurate dependencies
	- no `mmake depend' step
	- less process creation (no processes are created to
		build interface files).

Still to do:
	- handle --split-c-files
	- handle the IL backend properly
	- library installation
	- allow the compiler to be built and the nightly tests
to be run with `mmc --make'

compiler/make.m:
	Control the build process.

compiler/make.program_target.m:
	Build executables and libraries.

compiler/make.module_target.m:
Build C files, object files, interface files etc.

compiler/make.dependencies.m:
Work out the depenendencies between targets.

compiler/make.module_dep_file.m:
Record the inter-module dependencies between invocations of mmc.

compiler/make.util.m:
Utility predicates used by `mmc --make'.

compiler/compile_target_code.m:
This module will eventually contain the predicates used
to compile the target code files generated by the compiler
which are now in mercury_compile.m. (That will be done
as a separate change for ease of reviewing).

	For now compile_target_code.m

compiler/mercury_compile.m:
Export the predicates used to compile target code.

	Call make.m.

Pass the name of the top-level module in the source file to modules.m.
It is needed when generating the `.module_dep' files.

Lookup the option defaults (which will eventually be stored in
DEFAULT_MCFLAGS by the mmc script) before compiling. Up until now
the option defaults have been passed on the command line by the
mmc script, but with `mmc --make' the default options need
to be overridden by the value of the MCFLAGS make variable, but
the MCFLAGS make variable is overridden by command line options.

Pass the value of `--link-flags' to c2init.

Remove some uninformative messages printed when a C, IL, etc.
	compilation fails.

compiler/options_file.m:
Read files containing Make style variable assignments.

compiler/options.m:
doc/user_guide.texi:
Add a new options category: build system options.

	Add some extra options:
	--warn-undefined-options-variables - like mmake --warn-undefined-vars
--verbose-commands - print commands that the user might be
interested in, like C compilation, but not things
		like mercury_update_interface.
	--output-compile-error-lines - print the first n lines
of the error file generated by a command.
	--generate-mmc-make-modules-dependencies - generate dependencies
for use by `mmc --make' even when using Mmake.

	--il-assembler, --ilasm-flags, --mcpp-compiler, --mcpp-flags,
	--csharp-compiler, --csharp-flags, --install-prefix,
	--install-command, --libgrades, --options-files,
	--options-search-directories.

compiler/modules.m:
Add fields to the `module_imports' type for use by make.*m.

Don't try to fill in fields of the module_imports structure
lazily. It's error prone, and probably doesn't save much
	anyway.

Clean up the code to compute what foreign languages
are used by a list of item.

Simplify the handling of fact tables by recording that a module
containing fact tables has foreign code to implement them,
rather than requiring separate checks everywhere.

Generalise predicates like get_interface so that they
work even after the imported items have been read.

Fix the handling of header files with the LLDS backend.

Install the `.module_dep' files created for use by
	`mmc --make'.

compiler/*.m:
Use record syntax rather than explicit deconstruction to
refer to fields of the `module_imports' type.

compiler/*.m:
Be more careful about where output goes.
mercury_compile.m sets the output stream to be io__stderr_stream
at the start of compilation, so remove all explicit writes to
io__stderr_stream (with `--make' the error output stream may be
	a `.err' file, not io__stderr_stream).

Change all occurrences of io__tell/io__told to use
	io__open_output/io__close_output (io__told restores the current
output stream to io__stdout_stream, not the previous value).

compiler/passes_aux.m:
Make the output from system commands go to the current
output stream, not C stdout and stderr.

Allow commands to be printed with `--verbose-commands'.

Remove uninformative error messages when a command fails.

compiler/timestamp.m:
	Add functions oldest_timestamp and newest_timestamp.

compiler/llds_out.m:
Record the number of C files written with `--split-c-files'
	in <module>.num_split.

compiler/prog_io.m:
compiler/*.m:
`search_for_file' now returns the directory in which the
	file was found.

compiler/foreign.m:
Use sub-typing to make some calls to predicates in this
	module `det' rather than `semidet'.

compiler/handle_options.m:

9dd11b2fc6 Smart recompilation. Record version numbers for each item
Estimated hours taken: 400

Smart recompilation. Record version numbers for each item
in interface files. Record which items are used in each compilation.
Only recompile a module if the output file does not exist or

There is still some work to do on this:
- it doesn't work with inter-module optimization.

82378c381b Allow polymorphic ground insts. This change assumes that all inst
Estimated hours taken: 80

Allow polymorphic ground insts. This change assumes that all inst
parameters in the mode declaration for a predicate or function are
constrained to be ground-shared. This is a temporary measure until we
work out a nice syntax to allow the programmer to tell the compiler that
certain inst parameters may be treated as ground insts. Since we don't
currently support unconstrained inst parameters anyway, this shouldn't
cause a problem.

	TODO:
		- Add syntax, something like `:- mode p(in(I)) <= ground(I).',
to specify that an inst parameter represents a ground inst.
		- Allow abstract ground insts that are treated in a similar
way to what we've done here with ground inst parameters.
		- Make mode checking more efficient (i.e. rewrite the mode
		  system).

compiler/inst.m:
Add a new alternative for ground insts:
		`constrained_inst_var(inst_var)'.
	Define the type `inst_var_sub'.

compiler/inst_match.m:
	Change inst_matches_initial so that it:
		- handles constrained_inst_vars correctly;
		- returns the inst_var substitutions necessary for the call;
		- handles inst_matches_initial(ground(...), bound(...), ...)
properly (this requires knowing the type of the variable).

The last change has also been made for inst_matches_final

46a8da81cb Implement builtin tuple types, similar to those in Haskell.
Estimated hours taken: 30

Implement builtin tuple types, similar to those in Haskell.

Tuples are constructed and deconstructed using
the syntax X = {Arg1, Arg2, ...}.
Tuples have type `{Arg1, Arg2, ...}'.

Unary tuples (X = {Arg}) do work, unlike in Haskell. The rationale
for this is that it is useful to be able to construct unary tuples
to be passed to a polymorphic predicate which uses std_util__deconstruct
to deal with a tuple of any arity. Since this is probably the only
use for unary tuples, it's not really worth the effort of treating
them as no_tag types, so we don't.

The type-infos for tuples have the same structure as for higher-order
types. There is a single type_ctor_info for tuples, and the arity
is placed before the argument type_infos.

library/parser.m:
Change the way '{}/N' terms are parsed, so that the parsed
representation is consistent with the way other functors
are represented (previously the arguments were left as
unparsed ','/2 terms). This avoids special case code
	in prog_io__parse_qualified_term, term__term_to_type
	and term__type_to_term.

compiler/prog_io_dcg.m:
compiler/prog_io_util.m:
Handle the new structure of '{}/N' terms when parsing DCG escapes
by converting the argument list back into a single ','/2 term.

of tuples are performed by the generic unification functions
	in runtime/mercury_ho_call.c and runtime/mercury.c.

library/std_util.m:
Implement the various RTTI functions for tuples.

Encode tuple `TypeCtorDesc's in a similar way to that
used for higher-order types. This has the consequence that the limit
on the arity of higher-order types is now MAX_VIRTUAL_REG,
	rather than 2*MAX_VIRTUAL_REG.

Avoid calling MR_GC_free for the type-info vector returned
from ML_expand() for tuples because unlike the vectors
for du types, it is not copied.

runtime/mercury_type_info.h:
Add macros for extracting fields from tuple type-infos.
These just call the macros for extracting fields from higher-order
	type-infos.

	Add a macro MR_type_ctor_rep_is_variable_arity(), which
returns TRUE for tuples and higher-order types.

The distinction between higher-order and first-order types
is now misnamed -- the distinction is really between fixed arity
types and builtin variable arity types. I'm not sure whether
	it's worth renaming everything.

401298c013 Make the syntax for defining modes and insts similar to type equivalence.
Estimated hours taken: 2

Make the syntax for defining modes and insts similar to type equivalence.

Old syntax:
	:- inst foo = someinstdefn.
	:- mode foo :: someinst -> someotherinst.

New syntax:
	:- inst foo == someinstdefn.
	:- mode foo == someinst >> someotherinst.

The old syntax is still supported. For `::' and `->' it may eventually
be phased out (but it doesn't cause many problems apart from possible
confusion of users, so it's a low priority).

In the case of `:- inst' we could already use `==' or `=', however we

2725b1a331 Aditi update syntax, type and mode checking.
Estimated hours taken: 220

Aditi update syntax, type and mode checking.

Change the hlds_goal for constructions in preparation for
structure reuse to avoid making multiple conflicting changes.

compiler/hlds_goal.m:
	Merge `higher_order_call' and `class_method_call' into a single
`generic_call' goal type. This also has alternatives for the
various Aditi builtins for which type declarations can't
	be written.

Remove the argument types field from higher-order/class method calls.
It wasn't used often, and wasn't updated by optimizations
such as inlining. The types can be obtained from the vartypes
	field of the proc_info.

	Add a `lambda_eval_method' field to lambda_goals.

Add a field to constructions to identify which RL code fragment should
be used for an top-down Aditi closure.

Add fields to constructions to hold structure reuse information.
This is currently ignored -- the changes to implement structure
reuse will be committed to the alias branch.
This is included here to avoid lots of CVS conflicts caused by
changing the definition of `hlds_goal' twice.

Add a field to `some' goals to specify whether the quantification
can be removed. This is used to make it easier to ensure that
	indexes are used for updates.

Add a field to lambda_goals to describe whether the modes were
guessed by the compiler and may need fixing up after typechecking
	works out the argument types.

Add predicate `hlds_goal__generic_call_id' to work out a call_id
for a generic call for use in error messages.

compiler/purity.m:
compiler/post_typecheck.m:
Fill in the modes of Aditi builtin calls and closure constructions.
This needs to know which are the `aditi__state' arguments, so
it must be done after typechecking.

compiler/prog_data.m:
	Added `:- type sym_name_and_arity ---> sym_name/arity'.

Add a type `lambda_eval_method', which describes how a closure
is to be executed. The alternatives are normal Mercury execution,
bottom-up execution by Aditi and top-down execution by Aditi.

compiler/prog_out.m:
	Add predicate `prog_out__write_sym_name_and_arity', which
replaces duplicated inline code in a few places.

compiler/hlds_data.m:
	Add a `lambda_eval_method' field to `pred_const' cons_ids and
	`pred_closure_tag' cons_tags.

compiler/hlds_pred.m:
Remove type `pred_call_id', replace it with type `simple_call_id',
	which combines a `pred_or_func' and a `sym_name_and_arity'.

Add a type `call_id' which describes all the different types of call,
including normal calls, higher-order and class-method calls
	and Aditi builtins.

Add `aditi_top_down' to the type `marker'.

Remove `aditi_interface' from type `marker'. Interfacing to
Aditi predicates is now handled by `generic_call' hlds_goals.

Add a type `rl_exprn_id' which identifies a predicate to
	be executed top-down by Aditi.
	Add a `maybe(rl_exprn_id)' field to type `proc_info'.

Add predicate `adjust_func_arity' to convert between the arity
of a function to its arity as a predicate.

Add predicates `get_state_args' and `get_state_args_det' to
extract the DCG state arguments from an argument list.

	Add predicate `pred_info_get_call_id' to get a `simple_call_id'
for a predicate for use in error messages.

compiler/hlds_out.m:
Write the new representation for call_ids.

	Add a predicate `hlds_out__write_call_arg_id' which
replaces similar code in mode_errors.m and typecheck.m.

compiler/prog_io_goal.m:
Add support for `aditi_bottom_up' and `aditi_top_down' annotations
	on pred expressions.

compiler/prog_io_util.m:
compiler/prog_io_pragma.m:
	Add predicates
	- `prog_io_util:parse_name_and_arity' to parse `SymName/Arity'
		(moved from prog_io_pragma.m).
	- `prog_io_util:parse_pred_or_func_name_and_arity to parse
		`pred SymName/Arity' or `func SymName/Arity'.
	- `prog_io_util:parse_pred_or_func_and_args' to parse terms resembling
a clause head (moved from prog_io_pragma.m).

compiler/type_util.m:
Add support for `aditi_bottom_up' and `aditi_top_down' annotations
	on higher-order types.

	Add predicates `construct_higher_order_type',
	`construct_higher_order_pred_type' and
`construct_higher_order_func_type' to avoid some code duplication.

compiler/mode_util.m:
Add predicate `unused_mode/1', which returns `builtin:unused'.
	Add functions `aditi_di_mode/0', `aditi_ui_mode/0' and
	`aditi_uo_mode/0' which return `in', `in', and `out', but will
be changed to return `di', `ui' and `uo' when alias tracking
	is implemented.

compiler/goal_util.m:
	Add predicate `goal_util__generic_call_vars' which returns
any arguments to a generic_call which are not in the argument list,
for example the closure passed to a higher-order call or
the typeclass_info for a class method call.

compiler/llds.m:
compiler/exprn_aux.m:
compiler/dupelim.m:
compiler/llds_out.m:
compiler/opt_debug.m:
Add builtin labels for the Aditi update operations.

compiler/hlds_module.m:
Add predicate predicate_table_search_pf_sym, used for finding
possible matches for a call with the wrong number of arguments.

compiler/intermod.m:
Don't write predicates which build `aditi_top_down' goals,
because there is currently no way to tell importing modules
which RL code fragment to use.

compiler/simplify.m:
Obey the `cannot_remove' field of explicit quantification goals.

compiler/make_hlds.m:
	Parse Aditi updates.

Don't typecheck clauses for which syntax errors in Aditi updates
are found - this avoids spurious "undefined predicate `aditi_insert/3'"
	errors.

Factor out some common code to handle terms of the form `Head :- Body'.
Factor out common code in the handling of pred and func expressions.

compiler/typecheck.m:
	Typecheck Aditi builtins.

Allow the argument types of matching predicates to be adjusted
when typechecking the higher-order arguments of Aditi builtins.

Change `typecheck__resolve_pred_overloading' to take a list of
argument types rather than a `map(var, type)' and a list of
arguments to allow a transformation to be performed on the
	argument types before passing them.

compiler/error_util.m:
Move the part of `report_error_num_args' which writes
"wrong number of arguments (<x>; expected <y>)" from
typecheck.m for use by make_hlds.m when reporting errors
	for Aditi builtins.

compiler/modes.m:
compiler/unique_modes.m:
compiler/modecheck_call.m:
	Modecheck Aditi builtins.

compiler/lambda.m:
Handle the markers for predicates introduced for
	`aditi_top_down' and `aditi_bottom_up' lambda expressions.

compiler/polymorphism.m:
Add extra type_infos to `aditi_insert' calls
	describing the tuple to insert.

compiler/call_gen.m:
	Generate code for Aditi builtins.

compiler/unify_gen.m:
compiler/bytecode_gen.m:
Abort on `aditi_top_down' and `aditi_bottom_up' lambda
expressions - code generation for them is not yet implemented.

compiler/magic.m:
Use the `aditi_call' generic_call rather than create
a new procedure for each Aditi predicate called from C.

compiler/rl_out.pp:
compiler/rl_gen.m:
compiler/rl.m:
Move some utility code used by magic.m and call_gen.m into rl.m.

Remove an XXX comment about reference counting being not yet
implemented - Evan has fixed that.

library/ops.m:
compiler/mercury_to_mercury.m:
doc/transition_guide.texi:
Add unary prefix operators `aditi_bottom_up' and `aditi_top_down',
used as qualifiers on lambda expressions.
Add infix operator `==>' to separate the tuples in an
	`aditi_modify' call.

compiler/follow_vars.m:
Thread a `map(prog_var, type)' through, needed because
type information is no longer held in higher-order call goals.

compiler/table_gen.m:
Use the `make_*_construction' predicates in hlds_goal.m
	to construct constants.

compiler/*.m:
Trivial changes to add extra fields to hlds_goal structures.

doc/reference_manual.texi:
	Document Aditi updates.

	Use @samp{pragma base_relation} instead of
@samp{:- pragma base_relation} throughout the Aditi documentation
to be consistent with other parts of the reference manual.

6af76f74ea Move some declarations around and make some other minor changes in order
Estimated hours taken: 4

Move some declarations around and make some other minor changes in order
to reduce the number and complexity of the intermodule dependencies.
In particular, ensure that prog_data.m does not need to import
hlds*.m, purity.m, rl.m, or term_util.m.

Since we expect to have only one input language, but potentially many
different target languages, the general design principle that we have adopted
in order to minimize the number of dependencies, particularly cyclic ones,
is that modules which belong to an earlier stage of compilation should
not depend on modules which belong to a later stage of compilation.
However, that design principle has not been adhered to in many cases.
This change reduces the number of such cases.

compiler/prog_data.m:
compiler/hlds_pred.m:
Move definition of the types `eval_method' and `pred_or_func'
	from hlds_pred.m to prog_data.m.
Add new type `mode_num' to prog_data.m, defined by
`type mode_num == int', and change the proc_id argument of
the `unused_args' pragma to instead use this type instead of proc_id.
Delete the import of module hlds_pred from prog_data.m.

compiler/prog_data.m:
compiler/hlds_data.m:
Move the definition of the type `determinism' from hlds_data.m to
prog_data.m. Delete the import of module hlds_data from prog_data.m.

compiler/prog_data.m:
compiler/purity.m:
Move the definition of the type `purity' from purity.m to prog_data.m.
Add import of module prog_data to purity.m.
Delete the import of module purity from prog_data.m.

This is needed because purity.m imports hlds*.m and so by
	importing purity.m, prog_data.m was indirectly importing hlds*.m.

(An possible alternative here would be to split purity.m into two
parts, called say purity.m and check_purity.m; of these, only the
second would import hlds*.m. But that would be a significantly
	more complicated change.)

compiler/prog_data.m:
compiler/rl.m:
Move the definition of the `index_spec' and `index_type' types from
rl.m to prog_data.m. Delete the import of module rl from prog_data.m.

compiler/prog_data.m:
Add new types `pragma_arg_size_info' and `pragma_termination_info'
to prog_data.m. These are similar to the existing types
	`arg_size_info' and `termination_info' defined in term_util.m,
except that they correspond more directly to what is actually
	used in `pragma termination_info' declarations.

compiler/term_util.m:
	Add new predicates `add_context_to_arg_size_info' and
	`add_context_to_pragma_termination_info' for converting
the prog_data types to their corresponding term_util types.

compiler/make_hlds.m:
compiler/mercury_to_mercury.m:
compiler/prog_io_pragma.m:
compiler/unused_args.m:

User-guided type specialization.

compiler/prog_data.m:
compiler/prog_io_pragma.m:
compiler/modules.m:
compiler/module_qual.m:
compiler/mercury_to_mercury.m:
	Handle `:- pragma type_spec'.

compiler/prog_io_pragma.m:
Factor out some common code to parse predicate names with arguments.

compiler/hlds_module.m:
Added a field to the module_sub_info to hold information about
user-requested type specializations, filled in by make_hlds.m
and not used by anything after higher_order.m.

compiler/make_hlds.m:
For each `:- pragma type_spec' declaration, introduce a new predicate
which just calls the predicate to be specialized with the
specified argument types. This forces higher_order.m to produce
	the specialized versions.

compiler/higher_order.m:
Process the user-requested type specializations first to ensure
that they get the correct names.
Allow partial matches against user-specified versions, e.g.
		map__lookup(map(int, list(int)), int, list(int)) matches
		map__lookup(map(int, V), int, V).
Perform specialization where a typeclass constraint matches a
known instance, but the construction of the typeclass_info is
	done in the calling module.
Give slightly more informative progress messages.

compiler/dead_proc_elim.m:
	Remove specializations for dead procedures.

compiler/prog_io_util.m:
Change the definition of the `maybe1' and `maybe_functor' types
to avoid the need for copying to convert between `maybe1'
	and `maybe1(generic)'.
Changed the interface of `make_pred_name_with_context' to allow
creation of predicate names for type specializations which describe
	the type substitution.

compiler/make_hlds.m:
compiler/prog_io_pragma.m:
Make the specification of pragma declarations in error
messages consistent. (There are probably some more to
be fixed elsewhere for termination and tabling).

compiler/intermod.m:
Write type specialization pragmas for predicates declared
	in `.opt' files.

compiler/mercury_to_mercury.m:
Export `mercury_output_item' for use by intermod.m.

compiler/options.m:
	Add an option `--user-guided-type-specialization' enabled
	with `-O2' or higher.

compiler/handle_options.m:
	`--type-specialization' implies `--user-guided-type-specialization'.

compiler/hlds_goal.m:
Add predicates to construct constants. These are duplicated
in several other places, I'll fix that as a separate change.

compiler/type_util.m:
	Added functions `int_type/0', `string_type/0', `float_type/0'
and `char_type/0' which return the builtin types.
These are duplicated in several other places,
I'll fix that as a separate change.

library/private_builtin.m:
	Added `instance_constraint_from_typeclass_info/3' to extract
the typeclass_infos for a constraint on an instance declaration.
This is useful for specializing class method calls.
	Added `thread_safe' to various `:- pragma c_code's.
Added `:- pragma inline' declarations for `builtin_compare_*', which
are important for user-guided type specialization. (`builtin_unify_*'
are simple enough to go in the `.opt' files automatically).

compiler/polymorphism.m:
	`instance_constraint_from_typeclass_info/3' does not need type_infos.
	Add `instance_constraint_from_typeclass_info/3' to the
	list of `typeclass_info_manipulator's which higher_order.m
	can interpret.

5c955626f2 These changes make var' and term' polymorphic.
Estimated hours taken: 20

These changes make `var' and `term' polymorphic. This allows us to make
variables and terms representing types of a different type to those
representing program terms and those representing insts.

These changes do not *fix* any existing problems (for instance
there was a messy conflation of program variables and inst variables,
and where necessary I've just called varset__init(InstVarSet) with
an XXX comment).

NEWS:

11d8161692 Add support for nested modules.
Estimated hours taken: 50

Add support for nested modules.

- module names may themselves be module-qualified
- modules may contain `:- include_module' declarations
  which name sub-modules
- a sub-module has access to all the declarations in the
parent module (including its implementation section).

This support is not yet complete; see the BUGS and LIMITATIONS below.

LIMITATIONS
- source file names must match module names
	(just as they did previously)
- mmc doesn't allow path names on the command line any more
	(e.g. `mmc --make-int ../library/foo.m').
- import_module declarations must use the fully-qualified module name
- module qualifiers must use the fully-qualified module name
- no support for root-qualified module names
	(e.g. `:parent:child' instead of `parent:child').
- modules may not be physically nested (only logical nesting, via
  `include_module').

BUGS
- doesn't check that the parent module is imported/used before allowing
	import/use of its sub-modules.
- doesn't check that there is an include_module declaration in the
parent for each module claiming to be a child of that parent
- privacy of private modules is not enforced

-------------------

NEWS:
Mention that we support nested modules.

library/ops.m:
library/nc_builtin.nl:
library/sp_builtin.nl:
compiler/mercury_to_mercury.m:
Add `include_module' as a new prefix operator.
Change the associativity of `:' from xfy to yfx
(since this made parsing module qualifiers slightly easier).

compiler/prog_data.m:
	Add new `include_module' declaration.
Change the `module_name' and `module_specifier' types
from strings to sym_names, so that module names can
	themselves be module qualified.

compiler/modules.m:
	Add predicates module_name_to_file_name/2 and
	file_name_to_module_name/2.
Lots of changes to handle parent module dependencies,
to create parent interface (`.int0') files, to read them in,
to output correct dependencies information for them to the
	`.d' and `.dep' files, etc.
Rewrite a lot of the code to improve the readability
(add comments, use subroutines, better variable names).
Also fix a couple of bugs:
	- generate_dependencies was using the transitive implementation
dependencies rather than the transitive interface dependencies
to compute the `.int3' dependencies when writing `.d' files
(this bug was introduced during crs's changes to support
	  `.trans_opt' files)
	- when creating the `.int' file, it was reading in the
interfaces for modules imported in the implementation section,
not just those in the interface section.
This meant that the compiler missed a lot of errors.

library/graph.m:
library/lexer.m:
library/term.m:
library/term_io.m:
library/varset.m:
compiler/*.m:
Add `:- import_module' declarations to the interface needed

compiler/mercury_compile.m:
compiler/intermod.m:

	dependencies.)

compiler/make_hlds.m:

compiler/module_qual.m:
A couple of small changes to handle nested module names.

compiler/prog_util.m:
Add new predicates string_to_sym_name/3 (prog_util.m) and
	sym_name_to_string/{2,3} (prog_out.m).

compiler/*.m:
Replace many occurrences of `string' with `module_name'.
Change code that prints out module names or converts
them to strings or filenames to handle the fact that
module names are now sym_names intead of strings.
	Also change a few places (e.g. in intermod.m, hlds_module.m)
where the code assumed that any qualified symbol was
	fully-qualified.

compiler/prog_io.m:
compiler/prog_io_goal.m:
	Move sym_name_and_args/3, parse_qualified_term/4 and
	parse_qualified_term/5 preds from prog_io_goal.m to prog_io.m,
since they are very similar to the parse_symbol_name/2 predicate
already in prog_io.m. Rewrite these predicates, both
to improve maintainability, and to handle the newly
	allowed syntax (module-qualified module names).
	Rename parse_qualified_term/5 as `parse_implicit_qualified_term'.

compiler/prog_io.m:

9b7f11c6dd Reorganisation of modules to do with the inst data type.
Estimated hours taken: 20

Reorganisation of modules to do with the inst data type.

This is actually the first installment of the alias tracking mode
checker in disguise. A very good disguise. The rationale for
this reorganisation is to reduce coupling in the part of the mode
checker which is _not_ in this change (ie most of it).

Alias tracking requires a new kind of inst, alias(inst_key), where
an inst_key is a handle on some other sub-inst. With it goes a
data structure in which to store dereferenced insts and all the
operations which go with it. This code will go in the new module
inst.m so that it doesn't have to go in prog_data.m. (I briefly
considered putting it in instmap.m however this introduces some
bad coupling since instmap.m imports hlds_module.m. Putting it
in prog_data.m would cause hlds_*.m to depend on prog_data.m,
but we have designed things so that the dependencies go in the
other direction.)

The remainder of the reorganisation is a general cleanup: the
inst testing predicates (inst_is_*) have been moved out of
mode_util because they are not actually operations on modes at
all, and have been moved into inst_match. inst_match has then
been split because otherwise it would be 2000 lines long and
will get significantly bigger when aliasing is added. Roughly
speaking, any operations which create new insts from old ones
have been moved into a new module, inst_util while any operations
which test the values of insts remain in inst_match.

Also included are the removal of some NU-Prologisms since the
NU-Prolog version of the compiler is no longer supported. Two
changes here:

	- Removal of some when declarations.
	- A gross hack in inst_is_*_2, where two copies of
the same inst were passed into the predicate so that
one could be switched on. Thank NU-Prolog's lack of
	  common subexpression elimination.

compiler/inst.m:
New module which contains the data types inst, uniqueness,
	pred_inst_info, bound_inst.

compiler/inst_util.m:
New module which contains predicates which perform mode
	checking-like operations on insts.

	Moved in:
		abstractly_unify_inst, abstractly_unify_inst_functor,
		inst_merge, make_mostly_uniq_inst (from inst_match.m)

compiler/inst_match.m:
	Moved out:
		inst_merge, make_mostly_uniq_inst,
		abstractly_unify_inst, abstractly_unify_inst_functor
			(to inst_util.m)

	Moved in:
		inst_is_*, inst_list_is_*, bound_inst_list_is_*
			(from mode_util.m)

	Now exported:
		unique_matches_initial/2, unique_matches_final/2
		inst_contains_instname/3, pred_inst_matches/3
(They are required by inst_util.m, and they are
		useful in their own right.)

compiler/instmap.m:
	instmap_delta_lookup_var/3 reincarnated as
instmap_delta_search_var/3. The reason for this change is
	that previously, instmap_delta_lookup_var simply returned
`free' if the searched-for var did not occur in the
instmap_delta. This is somewhat non-obvious behaviour.
instmap_delta_search_var/3 fails in such a situation.

compiler/mode_util.m:
	Moved out:
		inst_is_*, inst_list_is_*, bound_inst_list_is_*
			(to inst_match.m)
(These are not really operations on modes.)

compiler/modecheck_call.m:
	Moved in modecheck_higher_order_func_call/5, from modecheck_unify.m

compiler/modecheck_unify.m:
	Moved out modecheck_higher_order_func_call/5, to modecheck_call.m
where it should have been all along.

compiler/prog_data.m:
Moved out the types inst, uniqueness, pred_inst_info,
	bound_inst (to inst.m).

91c4330db7 The first half of a change to introduce nondet pragma C goals.
Estimated hours taken: 12

The first half of a change to introduce nondet pragma C goals.
This half makes the necessary modifications to the HLDS; the next
half will modify the LLDS and emit it.

prog_data:
Add a new pragma type for nondet pragma c_codes; these specify
the names of a a bunch of variables to save across backtracking,
and a list of label names to which backtracking may take place.

Rename is_recursive to may_call_mercury, since this is a more
	direct expression of the meaning.

prog_io:
Move much of the functionality to new files.

prog_io_dcg, prog_io_goal, prog_io_pragma, prog_io_util:
New files, made up of pieces of prog_io.

hlds_goal:
Add an extra argument to the pragma_c_goals to store the extra
information present in the new type of pragma c_codes.

det_analysis:
Take into account that the new type of pragma_c goal may have
	more than one solution.

goal_util:
Rename variables in the new field of pragma_cs.

live_vars:
Allocate stack slots to the saved variables in the new type of pragma_c
	goals.

make_hlds:
Handle the new type of pragma_c goals.

mercury_output, hlds_out:
Output the new type of pragma_c goals.

garbage_out:
	Rename type "det" to "frame_type".

others:
Ignore one more arg of pragma_c goals or import prog_io_util.
