compiler/add_pragma.m:
The status checks in this module used to check for only one
of the four possible combinations of <is pragma exported, is the
pred the pragma is for expored>, even though we may want to generate
errors or warnings in three of those combinations. Fix this.
If an ambiguous pragma applies to more than one predicate, handle
the status checks of each separately.
When adding fact table pragmas to the HLDS, replace several lines
of code that reuse an existing largish predicate with the single line
of code from that predicate that we actually need.
Stop representing the statuses of pragmas using the pred_status type,
since the item_mercury_status that all items come with is adequate
for all our needs, and is impossible to confuse with the status
of the pred_info they refer to.

In the Mercury standard library, every exported predicate or function
has (or at least *should* have) a comment that documents it, including
the meanings of its arguments. About 35-40% of these modules put `'s
(left and right quotes) around the names of the variable representing
those arguments. Some tried to do it consistently (though there were spots
with unquoted or half quoted names), while some did it only a few places.
This is inconsistent: we should either do it everywhere, or nowhere.
This diff makes it nowhere, because
- this is what the majority of the standard library modules do;
- this is what virtually all of the modules in the compiler, profiler,
deep_profiler etc directories do;
- typing all those quotes when adding new predicates in modules that
follow this convention is a pain in the ass; and because
- on many modern terminals, `' looks non-symmetrical and weird.
Likewise, the comment explaining a predicate often started with
% `predname(arguments)' returns ...
This diff deletes these quotes as well, since they add nothing useful.
This diff does leave in place quotes around code fragments, both terms
and goals, where this helps delineate the boundaries of that fragment.

tests/debugger/declarative/catch_retry.inp:
Update test case.
Thread pools are often used to reduce poor performance on embarrassingly
parallel work loads. This isn't immediately necessary on the Java backend
however I've implemented it because:
+ It will be required when we implement parallel conjunctions for the
Java backend.
+ I want to implement parallel profiling on the Java backend and don't
want to have to implement this once now, and then re-implement it after
introducing thread pools later.
We want the thread pool to generally restrict the number of threads that are
in use, this reduces overheads. However, when one or more tasks become
blocked then it can be desirable to create extra threads, this helps ensure
that all processors are kept busy and that thread pooling doesn't contribute
to any deadlocks itself. The implementation is a work in prograss and
currently does not implement this second feature.
Java's API provides several different thread pools, see
java.util.concurrent.Executors, none of which are suitable. Specifically
the fixed thread pool is unsuitable as we want to be able to temporarily
exceed the normal number of threads as explained above; and the cached
thread pools, which are also very similar to the ThreadPoolExecutor class,
do not implement the correct algorithm for determining when a new thread
should be created (they can still perform poorly for embarassingly parallel
workloads). Additionally we cannot instrument this code as easily for
parallel profiling.
These changes alter the behaviour of Mercury threads on the Java backend in
two ways, they now behave more correctly and more like threads on the C
backends.
+ If a thread throws an exception it is now reported and the program is
aborted. Previously it was ignored and let pass to the Java runtime
where I assume it was reported.
+ The program now exits only after all threads have exited.
The ThreadPool will automatically detect the number of threads to use, or if
the -P flag is given in the MERCURY_OPTIONS environment variable it will
honor that.

Start a C# backend, adapted from mlds_to_java.m.
Some `pragma foreign_*' declarations are commented out in this change because
no bootstrap compiler will yet accept "C#" in the language specification.
The compiler already supported C# foreign_procs for the IL backend, but the IL
backend and this new backend do not agree on naming and calling conventions so
the changes to the existing C# foreign_procs will further break the IL backend.
Nobody cares.
Only tested so far with Mono on Linux.
compiler/mlds_to_cs.m:
New module. In the CVS Attic there exists an obsolete file named
mlds_to_csharp.m (replaced by mlds_to_managed.m) which we don't want to

reference type. Currently this is done by accepting a fake keyword
`valuetype' before the type name, like for IL.

Add a form of exception events in the source-to-source debugger for Java
grades. This could be implemented for other backends later.
Unlike in mdb, where throwing an exception will generate EXCP events for all
calls on the stack up to enclosing exception handler, we only generate a single
EXCP event for the call to `exception.throw_impl'. The next event will be the
EXIT of the procedure which caught the exception, i.e. exception.try*.
library/exception.m:
Add hooks in the Java implementations of throw_impl and catch_impl.
These do nothing until overridden by ssdb.m.
Replace an unused mode of catch_impl by a stub.
ssdb/ssdb.m:

When exception.throw_impl is called, emulate an exception event.
Remember the CSN at the start of a call to exception.catch_impl.
When an exception is caught, pop off any shadow stack frames between
the throw and the catch.
Add an `exception' command that stops at the next exception event.
Make the `finish' command handle exceptions. When an exception is
thrown, stop immediately unless we know that further up the stack is an
exception handler which will handle the exception before we reach the
final port that we wish to stop at.

Allow inlining of Java foreign_procs.
This revealed a problem with directly using the `succeeded' flag directly as
the success indicator in Java foreign_procs. When the code of the foreign_proc
becomes a nested function, and after nested functions are eliminated, there may
not be a variable called `succeeded' in that context; it is moved into
environment struct, and the transformation is not able to update handwritten
code to reflect that. The solution is to declare a local variable for the
foreign_proc, let the handwritten code assign that, then assign its final
value to the `succeeded' flag with an MLDS statement.
We take the opportunity to name the local variable `SUCCESS_INDICATOR', in
line with other backends.

Expose correct types to Java foreign code, e.g. a variable with a non-foreign
type like `list(T)' is now visible to Java foreign code with the type
`list.List_1' instead of `java.lang.Object'.
A complication is that foreign code for mutables is generated in the compiler
frontend, which doesn't know about the types used by the backends. For Java,
mutable variables had the generic type `Object' (except for primitives types)
but as we now generate foreign procs with the correct variable types, the code
for accessing a mutable would be type incorrect, e.g.
X = mutable_var; /* list.List_1 = Object */
Here we handle generated mutable predicates as a special case, using `Object'
for the global variable and argument types and generating typecasts as before.
The correct fix would be to move mutable code generation into the backends.
compiler/make_hlds_passes.m:
Make Java mutable variables always have the type `java.lang.Object'.
Mark Java mutable predicates with `may_not_duplicate' attributes, as
the generated code doesn't contain class-qualifiers for the mutable
variable, so copying that code into other Java files won't work.

code is being printed out.

Put all Mercury-generated Java classes into the package `jmercury' and
runtime classes into `jmercury.runtime'. The Mercury module hierarchy is
not reflected in the package name. We name sub-module classes using
their fully-qualified module names with `__' between components, e.g.
`bit_buffer.read' produces `class bit_buffer__read'.
As all generated Java code is in the same package we don't need to package
qualify identifiers, and we don't need the hack to avoid clashing package
and class names. It also makes it easier to write Java foreign code because
generated Java class names are easier to predict from Mercury module names.
The package names are not `mercury' and `mercury.runtime' because on
case-insensitive file systems we may end up with a `mercury' directory
that could be confused with the `Mercury' directory.
